Clerkenwell is an area in central London in the Borough of Islington.
The area borders St Pancras and Bloomsbury to the west, Smithfield to the south, St Luke’s to the east and Finsbury Estate to the north.
The name Clerkenwell took its name from the Clerk’s Well in Farringdon Lane, part of which remains visible to this day and is located on the ground floor of the modern Well Court building.
Former residents include Oliver Cromwell, Daniel Defoe and John Bell.
Previously an industrial area, Clerkenwell is now renowned for its status as the preferred home of many young urban professionals in addition to its nightlife, restaurants and galleries.
Contrastingly, it is also home to a large amount of commercial office space as the area boarders the business districts of the City of London and the West End.
Farrington Station serves this office space and cultural centre with an underground link. On the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines, it also serves as a portal to retail and tourist attractions throughout the city.
