Docklands is an area of London comprising the Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Greenwich boroughs.
The docks comprising the London Docklands, which in the past formed the world’s largest port, today mainly have commercial and residential uses.
The financial district of the area, Canary Wharf, is Europe’s largest grouping of skyscrapers and has grown to challenge The City for the titles of the capital’s central business district.
Due to its growing status the area has also become a target for terrorism and has been the subject of IRA attacks and Al-Qaeda threats over the last 2 decades.
In popular culture, the area is also famous for references made to it by Charles Dickens in novels such as Great Expectations.
Transport links in the area have received major investment in recent years and in 1999 the Isle of Dogs tube station opened, connecting Canary Wharf’s fantastic office space with the rest of the city via the Jubilee Line. The area is also served by the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).
