EC3 is a London postcode which covers Monument, Aldgate, Fenchurch Street and Tower Hill. It roughly covers the south eastern corner of the City, with a small part being in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The district contains Cornhill, Eastcheap, Gracechurch Street and Mincing Lane.
The Monument to the Great Fire of London, more commonly known as Monument, is a 202 foot tall stone column located 202 feet away from where the fire started in the king’s bakers shop in Pudding Lane. Nearby Monument Underground station is named after the Monument.
Aldgate office space is dominated by the insurance industry nowadays – AXA’s headquarters can be found here. Aldgate also has a lot of prominent buildings, most notably The Gherkin, which was built on the site where an IRA bomb was detonated in 1992, and the London Metal Exchange. Aldgate also has its own tube station which is on the Circle and Metropolitan Lines.
The Tower of London is located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets but falls under EC3. It’s separated from the City by open space known as Tower Hill. The Tower of London has a reputation for being the most haunted building in England with alleged sightings of both Anne Boleyn and King Henry VI in the past 100 years.
