The Spotlight is on: Greenwich

The area of Greenwich is often overlooked due to its location further down the Thames than the likes of The City and The West End. However, in terms of business as well as attraction points, this location is accelerating at great speed and the council are very keen to continue the growth of this area.

Many schemes are in place throughout Greenwich that both aid and create jobs and innovation for the region. Particularly known for its work in technology, Greenwich has recently produced London’s first driverless cars. The development is delivered by the £8 million project GATEway who are funded by industry and led by TFL. The teams of companies and academics involved are aiming to produce invaluable knowledge of automated vehicles to industry and government enabling safe innovation and fitting in with the borough’s smart city ethos. The design of these driverless shuttles is based on the electric passenger shuttles at Heathrow Airport however they are not restricted to dedicated tracks. The project is looking in to the possibility of driverless autonomous valet parking and automated urban deliveries for the future providing the success of this recent project.

The idea of a smart city is something that they are very much focused upon in Greenwich with a team known as Digital Greenwich in place to implement the strategies. Centring on transforming infrastructure, public services, neighbourhoods and communities as well as their economy, taking office space within the region currently would be very wise. Faye Twigg of Curved Serviced Offices describes working in Greenwich by saying, “There is so much to see and do in Greenwich and working in the area is great for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the chaotic inner city whilst still experiencing London life.

It is home to the spectacular O2 arena with its magnificent hotel just a short covered walk away and a great choice of restaurants and bars onsite. The Emirates cable car Thames crossing is also in this area which showcases the innovation of the region, providing a unique and aesthetic way to travel. Faye also explains how working in this locality offers the best of both worlds stating, “The benefits of working in the Greenwich area are being situated in a scenic, historic and green part of London whilst still being able to quickly and easily commute into the city and canary wharf.”

In terms of support for businesses Greenwich’s community is also very strong. The Greenwich E-Business Support Programme is available for companies working in the area who wish to strengthen their online presence. The programme run by South East Enterprise in partnership with the Council demonstrates to companies small and cost-effective changes which will boost their online sales as well as attracting new customers. It is not only tech companies that will find support and growth within Greenwich, many organisations and business are currently thriving in the area. One of Londonoffice’s best buildings in the area is that of Creek Road. The centre is filled with wonderful natural sunlight with the main spaces being comprised of bespoke glass partitions separating up the individual offices and meeting rooms. All areas of the centre are extremely modern and sleek with high spec fixtures and fittings. Breakout spaces are also of exceedingly high standards providing luxury space for guests and employees any time of the day. A real benefit of this space which is rare in the busier areas of London is that there is onsite parking making driving to work much less hassle.
