Moorgate Developments and History
Moorgate is also home to Finsbury Circus Garden, the oldest public garden in London which dates back to 1606. The moor in which Moorgate is named after by 1006 had been raised to compliment the layout of the pathways, elm trees and benches turning it into a fully-fledged park. Today the area is a Grade II listed garden and since having undergone a redesign courtesy of Charles Dance the Younger in 1815 the Moor Fields are the last remaining part of the original development. Surrounded by elegant curved terraces and other architecturally stunning buildings these grounds provide a beautiful landscape in which to sit and enjoy a bite to eat or wander through on your way to work. The park is famous for being the only site in London which houses a brilliant Japanese Pagoda tree as well as showcasing a selection of wonderful plane trees, acquired by The Corporation of London in 1900.
Originally this area of land was known as nothing more than the section of the City Wall where a gate was built to lead out to the Moor. This postern was created in 1415 to give the people of the area easier access to the Moorfields without them having to travel to Bishopsgate or Cripplegate to pass through the wall. Eventually as like with much of the development of London after this time, industry and housing began to form following the demolition of the wall and thus modern day Moorgate was eventually formed.
