The architect and construction company behind the Gherkin have been given the go-ahead to breathe new life into London office space for rent at Monument Square.
The dramatic, glass-fronted building will provide nine storeys of Grade A London office space for rent in a prime location adjacent to the Monument column. It has been designed by Make architects, whose previous London office projects have included the UBS headquarters at 5 Broadgate in the City of London and 55 Baker Street in the City of Westminster. The firm’s founder, architect Ken Shuttleworth, was behind the design of London’s most iconic building, the Gherkin.
Gary Rawlings, partner at Make Architects, described their vision for the new London office space for rent as “a high quality, contemporary, energy efficient building which celebrates its contextual setting adjacent to Wren and Hooke’s Monument to the Great Fire of London.”
Of the 85,000 sq. ft. of office space available in the new building, around 40,000 sq. ft. will be occupied by construction and development company Skanska, who are the developing the site. The Swedish construction company previously worked with Shuttleworth when they were responsible for construction of the Gherkin.
Skanska acquired the site for £13.3m in July 2012, with plans to complete a new development within two years of gaining consent. Now that planning permission has been secured, work can begin to clear away several existing buildings at 11-19 Monument Square. They will be replaced by new London office space for rent, which is expected to be completed in 2015.
Skanska’s project follows hot on the heels of another office development in Monument which is also transforming vacant offices into much-needed Grade A London office space for rent . The ten-storey office building on Monument Street has been designed by David Walker Architects and is set to open this summer.
