BBC Television Centre Could Make Way for Office Space in West London
Television Centre could be converted into office space in West London as the BBC confirms it is to sell its fifty year old White City site.
Office space in West London could be created should BBC’s Television Centre be converted once the corporation agrees to the sale of the property next year.
The BBC has confirmed that its flagship building the Television Centre will be sold, with the possibility of over one million square foot of office space in West London available for companies interested in taking on space at the site.
Other uses could include it being used by other smaller independent production and television firms when the sale eventually goes through.
The BBC has been put under pressure by successive governments to become more accountable and cost effective with tax payers’ money. One way they hope to do this is by selling off the lucratively situated Television Centre on Wood Lane in White City, close to QPR’s Loftus Road football stadium.
The 1960s building has been the subject of fierce debate about its future but the sale has been agreed for sometime next year. This means that BBC staff will vacate the site by December 2011. Some will relocate to Broadcasting House at Portland Place in London’s West End, while the rest will head north to the BBC’s new offices in Salford Quays.
Lambert Smith has been appointed to manage the 15 acre site which will more than likely be sold to private property developers. The BBC are likely to retain a stake in the property but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
While the iconic television centre will be missed by staff and general public, the corporation feel they have been left with little choice but to sell the site. They are looking to become more accountable and less reliant on the licence fee levied against every member of the public who owns a television in the UK for income.
